Desert Flowers In My Lungs

Jim Kirk (reboot) is suffering from Hanahaki Disease due to his love for Spock.

Hanahaki is caused by one-sided/unrequited love. Flowers blossom within one's lungs causing one to cough up first petals and eventually whole flowers. The type of flowers vary from person to person but are always symbolic of the loved one (in Kirk's case he is coughing up flowers native to Vulcan). Eventually the sufferer suffocates and dies. The flowers can be surgically removed but doing so also removes the sufferer's ability to feel love. If the love is returned the flowers disappear. However if the object of the unrequited love tries to force themselves to return the sufferer's love then the flowers will wilt and decay causing the sufferer to go into toxic shock.  

I based the design and colors of the flowers off real life cacti flowers.

I did not create Hanahaki disease but I did invent the part about the flowers decaying and causing toxic shock should the object of affection try to force themselves to return the love.
